The sensor consists of a cylindrical, nickel-plated metal body with an M18 thread and 2 flat nuts. The cable outlet is located opposite the front face. On the side is the yellow LED, which lights up when dampened. A high-frequency electromagnetic field is generated in the oscillator, which exits at the front face of the sensor. It forms a spatial area above the active surface, which is called the active switching zone. If an electrically conductive material enters the field, energy is withdrawn from the oscillator. This dampens the oscillations to such an extent that they stop completely or largely. If the conductive material is removed from the active zone, the oscillator can oscillate again at full amplitude. These two states can be electronically evaluated with the DRIW-E16. The sensor contains the following main components: 1. an oscillator (LC resonant circuit), 2. rectifier filter, 3. flip-flop amplifier, 4. output stage
