Viaccess decryption module CI modules are used in receivers with a common interface (CI slot) to decrypt coded data (i.e. program content such as pay TV or pay radio). The common interface technology enables the use of various types of CI modules and thus creates the prerequisite for the simple and individual use of different access authorization systems. Receivers with a common interface are therefore very flexible and, above all, future-proof. Authorization to use the decryption process (provided by the respective CI module) is verified using a smart card (authentication). A smart card is therefore essential for the final decryption of the transmitted data.
